Formerly known as Perth Oval, NIB Stadium was originally constructed in 1910. Having since become a rectangular stadium, one hundred years later, it was decided to improve the facilities and a master plan was drawn up to include more grandstands, catering and corporate facilities.
HG Sports Turf was appointed in 2013 by the Government of WA, to reconstruct the field. A critical part of this redevelopment plan was to improve the field of play that suffered from poor soils and drainage.
The reconstruction of the field consisted of excavating and removing over 9300m3 of soil, installing a unique groundwater drainage system, an impermeable membrane to separate the acidic groundwater from the field, a gravel drainage layer, rootzone sand layer followed by 9500m2 of patented Eclipse® Stabilised Turf and a synthetic turf perimeter tested to both FIFA and IRB standards.
The Eclipse® stabilised turf was grown off-site at a specially selected turf nursery and the establishment, maintenance and harvesting was overseen by HG Sports Turf to ensure that the turf had been grown to the correct quality standard.
The turf system is designed to accommodate considerably more wear and tear than traditional natural turf systems and this has been the case at NIB Stadium with the fixtures for both Perth Glory and Western Force as well as a Taylor Swift concert two months after installation.
When an area (such as a goal mouth) becomes worn and unsightly, due to the loss of grass, Eclipse still provides a stable playing surface. However, if desired, the area can be removed and replaced with freshly grown mature Eclipse produced off site in a turf nursery, which as soon as it is installed, is ready to play.
“This is a fantastic result for our rectangular sporting codes as the redevelopment will provide a huge boost to the stadium amenity and, in turn, will provide a much better spectator experience.”
